So, as I said in an earlier post, one of the advantages of having an e-Reader, like the Kobo, is that I am able to download EPUB ARCs from Net Galley. My first download was Susan Juby's new adult book Home to Woefield (or Woefield Poultry Collective in Canada) that is set to come out March 8, 2011. One of the requirements for being allowed to read Net Galley's ARCs is that you review what you've just read. So here is my review of Home to Woefield. Right from the beginning of Woefield, I was reminded of the hilariously funny Wingfield plays about a Toronto stockbroker, who drops out of the city rat race to buy a farm. Only in Woefield, it's a failed Brooklyn YA writer, who inherits a farm on Vancouver Island. Juby tells the story from four equally humorous viewpoints: Prudence, the overly-environmentally conscious, failed YA writer; Seth, the reclusive, metalhead, alcoholic blogger; Earl, the elderly, cantankerous, potty-mouthed farmhand; and Sara, the calm, cool and collected eleven-and-a-half-year-old Jr. Poultry Fancier's Club member, who is obsessed with chickens, leadership qualities and making sure no one goes to hell. Oh, the dysfunction is sidesplittingly rampant! But what Juby did so well in her last book Nice Recovery - taking that painful dysfunction and turning it into heartwarming humor - she does equally well if not better in Home to Woefield. I can't remember the last time I laughed out loud so many times while reading a book! So if you're looking for a thigh-slapping wonderful read to get you going for spring, remember Home to Woefield for March 2011!
Edited to add: One of my favorite moments in the book is when handsome vet, Dr. Eustace, tells alcoholic Seth that he, too, has had an addiction problem and been in a self-help program, and Seth thinks - "This bastard was in a self-help program? For what? Square-jawed, cleft-chinned sufferers? Handsome Bastards Anonymous?"
LOL! It *still* makes me laugh when I read it! ;)
*Oh, and I almost forgot, Susan is having a contest starting today on her blog to win copies of Home to Woefield *and* three HEN BAGS!! Make sure you enter! :D
